How much of what you experience is actually the world—and how much is your brain’s best guess?

Consciousness and Your Brain: Perception or Deception? explores the fascinating relationship between perception, attention, memory, emotion, expectation, and conscious awareness. Rather than treating your senses as a perfect window onto reality, the book shows how the brain actively builds an internal model from incomplete information—and how that model can sometimes mislead you.

Using approachable neuroscience, psychology, familiar examples, and practical reflection, M.R. Minarsich examines how prediction, selective attention, sensory limits, stress, mood, and prior experience shape what feels true.

Inside, you’ll explore:

  • the difference between perception and conscious awareness
  • how the brain fills in missing information and predicts what comes next
  • why illusions and blind spots reveal how perception is constructed
  • how attention determines which information reaches awareness
  • how emotion, stress, and cognitive load can narrow or distort perception
  • why two people can experience or remember the same event differently
  • practical ways to recognize blind spots, question assumptions, and respond with greater clarity

The goal isn’t to make you distrust your mind. It’s to understand it well enough to notice when expectation, emotion, and automatic processing may be shaping the story you’re telling yourself.

Book Three in the Mindful Meditation Series by M.R. Minarsich.

A Fascinating Look at How We Perceive Reality

This book made me pause and question how much of what I experience is actually an accurate reflection of the world around me. I liked the way it uses familiar examples, such as the invisible gorilla experiment, to make complicated ideas about perception and attention easier to understand. The discussion of memory, emotions, assumptions, and the brain’s tendency to fill in gaps feels especially relatable. It encourages you to become more mindful of your own thoughts without making the subject feel overly technical. A thought provoking read for anyone curious about consciousness, perception, and the surprising ways our brains shape everyday experience.

Made me question how much I actually notice

This book made me think about something I normally take for granted: how much I trust what I see and remember. The part about the invisible gorilla experiment really stuck with me. It’s kind of crazy to think that something can be right in front of you and you can still completely miss it just because your attention is somewhere else. I caught myself thinking about situations in my own life where I was probably so focused on one thing that I missed everything else going on around me.I also liked the way the book explains that our brains aren’t just recording everything exactly as it happens. We’re constantly filtering information, filling in gaps, and interpreting things based on what we already expect. That made the sections about misunderstandings and memory especially interesting to me.Some of the science gets more detailed, so this wasn’t a book I wanted to rush through, but the everyday examples helped a lot. I found myself stopping a few times just to think about what I had read.Overall, it gave me a different perspective on how easily we can be completely sure about something and still not have the full picture. That was probably my biggest takeaway from the book.

Thought-Provoking Look at the Mind

Consciousness And Your Brain: Perception Or Deception? by M.R. Minorsich is an interesting exploration of consciousness, perception, and the way our minds shape how we experience the world. The book blends ideas about the brain with mindfulness and meditation, encouraging readers to question how much of what we perceive reflects reality and how much is created by our own thoughts and interpretations. I especially enjoyed the way it prompted me to think more deeply about awareness and my own mental habits. A thought-provoking read for anyone interested in consciousness, mindfulness, meditation, or understanding the mind a little better.

good quick read

The look into how we as people function on a day-to-day basis is dedicated by consciousness and perception. When you slow down and think about what happens on the science side we can go and think that are minds can have a certain amount of deception. The person in the gorilla suit experiments do lend to how we may be guide to limit perception. if we are not told to look at something we have the chance to miss it. overall, the book does teacher you more about how brains are creating the whole world that we experience. which in turn does help with further self-discovering and insight that can help change or shape habits and many other aspects of life.

Amazing book

This book grabs you from the first page. Using the “invisible gorilla” idea as its anchor, it explores how our brains filter reality, overlook the unexpected, and confidently believe incomplete stories. The writing is vivid, the examples are unsettling in the best way, and it leaves you questioning how much of your daily life you actually see. A quick, engaging read for anyone interested in psychology, perception, or hidden cognitive blind spots.
